Is My Snail Dead or Sleeping? How to Tell (and What to Do)

Quick answer
The smell test is the most reliable: a dead snail smells strongly and unmistakably bad when you lift it out. A closed trapdoor (operculum) that resists a gentle touch usually means the snail is alive and sealed in. A snail hanging loosely out of its shell that does not pull back, or an empty shell, means it has died. New snails often rest for a day or two after shipping, so give them time before you decide.
| Sign | Usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Trapdoor shut tight | Alive, sealed in and resting | Leave it right side up and wait a day |
| Body out, moves when touched | Alive | Nothing; it is just resting |
| Body hanging out, limp, no reaction | Likely dead | Do the smell test |
| Strong rotten smell | Dead | Remove now and test ammonia |
| Floating | Can be air trapped in the shell, or dead | Smell test; if no smell, set it on the bottom |
| Reef snail upside down on sand | Stuck, not dead yet | Flip it onto a rock |
| Empty shell | Dead, or taken by a hermit crab | Remove and check water |
Snails rest a lot
Snails do not keep a schedule like fish. They often stop for hours, sometimes a full day, especially after a big meal, a water change, or a move to a new tank. Many aquarium snails have a trapdoor called an operculum that they pull shut when they rest or feel unsafe. A closed snail sitting still on the bottom is very often just fine.
New arrivals are the most common worry. After a day or two in a shipping bag, it is normal for snails to stay closed for up to a couple of days while they settle in. Set them right side up in a calm spot and check again the next day.
The smell test
Lift the snail out of the water and sniff it. A dead snail breaks down fast, and the smell is strong and very hard to mistake for anything else. A live snail smells like the tank, or like nothing at all. If you are unsure, the smell test is the one to trust.
The trapdoor test
Gently press on the trapdoor with a fingertip or a soft tool. If the snail is alive, the trapdoor will be tight, and you may see it pull in a little. If it is loose, falls inward, or the body hangs out and does not pull back when touched, the snail has probably died. Do not pry the trapdoor open. That can injure a living snail.
Floating snails
A floating snail is not always dead. Mystery snails in particular take in air to breathe and can trap a bubble that makes them float for a while. Some snails float after shipping or when they want to move to a new spot. If a floating snail passes the smell test, place it on the bottom and watch it. If it floats for days, check the smell again and test your water.
Upside down reef snails
On a reef, an upside down snail is usually alive but stuck. Astrea and many turbo snails cannot flip themselves over on flat sand. A marine biologist writing for Reefkeeping magazine explained that many astreas come from rocky rubble where a fallen snail lands against rock, so they never developed a way to right themselves. Left on its back, a snail can starve or get eaten by a hermit crab. Turn it over and set it on a rock. Many keepers do a quick check each evening.
If a snail did die
- Remove it right away. A dead snail rots fast and adds ammonia.
- Test the water for ammonia and nitrite, and for reef tanks salinity and temperature.
- Do a water change if ammonia shows up.
- Think about why. Starving in a very clean tank, copper from medicine, soft water that damages shells, sudden changes in salinity, and snail eating tank mates are the usual causes.
New snails from us
Our live arrival guarantee covers snails that arrive dead. Because a closed snail can look dead when it is only resting, do the smell test before you decide. If a snail really did arrive dead, send a photo of it in the bag within two hours of delivery and we will make it right. Most snails that look lifeless when the box is opened are moving within a day.
Signs of a healthy snail
- It moves around the tank over a day or two, even if slowly.
- The trapdoor is firm when closed.
- The shell is not getting thin, white or pitted. Pitting points to soft or acidic water.
- It responds when touched.
- For nerites, fresh white eggs are often a sign of a well fed snail.
Questions
How long can a snail stay closed up?
A day or two is common, especially after shipping or a move. Longer can happen too. Use the smell test to be sure.
Why is my mystery snail floating?
Often it has trapped air while breathing at the surface. If there is no bad smell, it is usually alive.
Why do my snails keep dying?
Common causes are not enough food, copper in medicine, very soft water, sudden changes in water, and tank mates that eat snails.
Should I flip over an upside down snail?
It never hurts to turn a snail right side up. Reef astreas and turbos really need the help.
What does a dead snail smell like?
Very strong and rotten. Once you smell it, you will not forget it.
