How to Acclimate New Snails

Quick answer
Float the sealed bag for 15 to 20 minutes to match temperature, then add a little tank water to the bag every 5 minutes for 30 to 45 minutes (or drip acclimate). Lift the snails out by hand and place them in the tank without pouring in the shipping water.
| Temperature match | 15 to 20 minutes floating |
|---|---|
| Water mixing | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Saltwater snails | Drip slowly, they are more sensitive to salinity swings |
| Shipping water | Throw it away, do not add it to your tank |
Before the box arrives
Check that your tank is cycled and your parameters are steady. Have a cup or small bucket and some airline tubing ready.
Step by step
- Open the box in dim light.
- Float the sealed bags for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Open the bag and add a quarter cup of tank water every 5 minutes, or drip acclimate.
- After 30 to 45 minutes, move the snails by hand into the tank.
If a snail looks dead
Snails often stay shut for hours after a trip. Place it right side up and wait. A dead snail smells very strong; if you find one, take a photo and contact us within two hours of delivery.
Questions
Can I skip acclimation?
Please do not. Sudden changes in temperature, pH or salinity are the most common cause of losses in the first days.
