How Many Snails Per Gallon?

Quick answer
A simple starting point: 1 nerite per 5 gallons, 1 mystery snail per 5 gallons, 1 rabbit snail per 10 gallons, and about 1 reef snail per gallon in a mature saltwater tank. Add more only if algae keeps growing.
| Nerite snails | About 1 per 5 gallons |
|---|---|
| Mystery snails | About 1 per 5 gallons |
| Rabbit snails | About 1 per 10 gallons |
| Reef snails, mixed | About 1 per gallon |
| New tanks | Start with half and add later |
Why fewer is better
Snails eat what the tank grows. Too many means hungry snails and extra waste. Start low and add as you see algae.
Example tanks
A 20 gallon community tank: 3 or 4 nerites and 1 or 2 mystery snails. A 40 gallon reef: 12 astrea, 6 turbo, 12 cerith and 10 nassarius snails, added over a few weeks.
Questions
Do snails add a lot of waste?
Mystery and rabbit snails are large and add more waste than nerites. Count them in your stocking.
